- Touring Greece Without a Plan
- An Exciting Journey Begins
Summer is on the Horizon
2021 has been a rather dull year so far. With most countries under some form of lockdown or other, all we’ve been left to do is daydream about sunnier places. Well, I’ve decided to go all-in on my travelling this year so, assuming Covid doesn’t lay them to waste, let me tell you about my plans…
Who Needs a Job Anyway?
Over the past several years, I’ve been fortunate to build up quite a decent pot of savings in addition to buying a central apartment in the city where I live. I’ve reached a point in my career where it feels like time to take a break: after 15 years without a single gap in employment, I feel a bit burned out and perhaps a little jaded in my current role. So… three months ago I gave notice on my job and my last day was 30th June, with no new position lined up – I’m taking a break from it all!
What am I doing with this break then, you might wonder? Why, I’m heading to Greece of course!!
Moving? Or is it just a Holiday?
At first, I investigated the possibility of getting a residence visa that would allow me to remain in Greece for a year or more. Unfortunately, this proved difficult and, ultimately, during the time it was taking to get a decision from the Greek embassy, I decided that I might not want to stay that long anyway. As a result, I am limited to a 90-day stay due to the limitations of being a non-EU citizen (thanks, Brexit!) under the Schengen agreement.
My flights are now booked: I’m heading off on Wednesday 7th July and (provisionally) returning on Saturday 2nd October! Excited doesn’t quite cover it!!
So, What’s the Plan then?
I’m going to be posting further updates as I flesh out a rough itinerary, but the intention is to keep things as flexible as possible by not booking travel or accommodation too far in advance. However, I have locked in the initial 9-days as my parents happen to be flying out to Greece on 7th July to visit Crete and it made sense to travel with them. We’ll be staying in Palaiochora on the southwest coast, which is a part of Crete I’ve never visited before so it also ticks the box for being a new experience.
That’s all for now
I’m already working on a follow-up post with some more details of places I’m hoping to visit, so look out for that shortly.
